AI Enhancements
We’re excited to share several powerful AI updates which were released over the last two months that make Discover even smarter and more intuitive:
AI Assistant in Bookmarks
The AI Assistant is now available directly within the Bookmarks section, making it easier to summarize, explore, and interact with saved resources.
AI Search Feature Snippet
A new AI Search Feature Snippet is now available. This option is useful for administrators who prefer to keep keyword search as the primary search method. It allows them to display their own results from their own resources at the top, while still including the highly relevant and powerful AI Search results within the page.
Multilingual Spell Check
Our spell check engine has been completely rebuilt with AI capabilities and now recognizes and corrects spelling across multiple languages. Administrators no longer need to set a predefined language. This is especially useful for multilingual institutions where, for example, the interface is in Spanish but users search in both English and Spanish.
Smarter Autosuggest
The new autosuggest engine delivers more relevant and context-aware results than ever, helping patrons find what they need faster. Like the new spell check, it no longer requires a preset language and automatically detects the language of each query. Search suggestions are optimized across multiple domains, including Medical, Engineering, and General Academic.
AI Key Metrics Improvements
- Added a new Research Question metric.
- Increased flexibility as Key Metrics now supports up to 15 items.

AI Improvements: AI Assistant & Smarter PICO Search
We’ve upgraded our AI-powered features to provide users with deeper insights, more relevant results, and a more intuitive search experience.
AI Assistant
The previous AI Summarize feature has been replaced with the new AI Assistant, a dropdown menu in the Discover results action bar that offers multiple AI-driven options.
- Best Match Summary (formerly AI Summarize): Still summarizes top results, now clearly labeled and always available when semantic search is active
When users select 2–10 articles, even across pages, additional AI analysis options become available:
- Essential Insights: highlights key findings shared across the selected documents.
- Concept Discovery: reveals shared themes or keywords and suggests related searches.
- Key Metrics: shows structured data like sample size, citation counts, peer review status, and more.
All findings include full references to their source articles. The AI results screen supports comparison, feedback, and a streamlined reading experience.
PICO Search: Now AI-Powered
The PICO widget now supports an AI Search mode, which translates structured PICO(T) inputs into natural language queries before running the search.
This results in more relevant, readable, and context-aware outputs—especially valuable for clinical researchers.
Users can switch between Boolean and AI Search (if both are enabled) and admins can configure available modes via the Widget Settings panel.

Smarter Related Searches: Recency Awareness Built In
Our AI Search engine has been smart enough to understand when recency matters—applying different levels of recency ranking based on the context of the query. Whether your patrons are exploring foundational knowledge or seeking the latest medical research, the engine adapts accordingly.
Now, we’re taking it one step further by enhancing the Search Suggestions feature snippet to reflect that same intelligence.
What’s New?
When a user runs a search, the Search Suggestions box now includes suggestions that reflect recency-sensitive phrasing when relevant. For example, when searching about ongoing medical or scientific topics like COVID-19 vaccines, the system may suggest:
“Recent advancements in COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness”
“Trends in COVID-19 vaccine efficacy research”
“COVID-19 vaccines and booster shot effectiveness”
These suggestions are context-aware and designed to gently guide users toward the most relevant, up-to-date content.

AI Search: Context-Aware Recency Boosting
We’re excited to introduce a new AI-powered enhancement to our search capabilities: Context-Aware Recency Boosting.
Until now, our AI search engine applied a general "recency boost," prioritizing newer articles over older ones, even though our AI Index contains valuable content spanning over 10 years. This worked well for many queries, ensuring patrons had access to up-to-date information. However, we recognize that not all searches benefit from a one-size-fits-all approach.
With this new update, our AI dynamically adjusts the recency boost based on the context of the search query, optimizing the balance between relevance and publication date. Here’s how it works:
Time-Insensitive Topics
: For queries that focus on foundational knowledge or historical perspectives—like "Keynes’ theory of consumption" or "history of carbon capture technology"—the AI turns off the recency boost entirely. This ensures that older, highly relevant articles are included in the results. Default Strategy (Moderate Recency Boost)
: For most queries, especially in fields like medicine, technology, or general research, we maintain our default strategy. This applies a moderate recency boost, favoring newer articles while still including older ones if they are highly relevant.Highly Time-Sensitive Topics
: For queries explicitly seeking the latest advancements—like "latest innovations in carbon capture technology"—the AI applies a stronger recency boost, prioritizing articles from the past 1-2 years. This novel approach makes the search algorithm smarter and more in tune with what your patrons are looking for.

AI Enhancements
We’ve made several key updates to our AI suite:
- Language Filter(Admin Controlled): Administrators can now configure the language of AI search results for their patrons. Through the AI admin panel (Admin Panel > Discover > Settings > Results), you can choose to either display results in all languages or limit them to English only, depending on your institution's needs.
- AI Summarize Improvements: When using the copy button for AI-generated summaries, the copied text now includes reference numbers and a full list of references, including titles and URLs.
- Main Entity Recognition for Knowledge Graphs: For natural language queries such as "which underlying disease had the highest mortality rate during COVID?", we’ve enhanced our AI to extract the main entity (e.g., "COVID-19") from the query. This allows us to display the relevant knowledge graph, even when the query does not match an exact sentence in the source materials.
